Trotz der vielen Arten und Größen stammen alle heutigen Hunderassen von den Grauer Wolf. Die Domestikation begann vor mehr als 12.000 Jahren auf der Nordhalbkugel. Archäologische Funde belegen, dass die wirklichen Größenunterschiede bei Haushunden auf 7000 v. Chr. datiert werden können. Dieser Trend wurde in der Römerzeit verbessert, als die Eigenschaften vieler aktueller Rassen definiert wurden.
